Thankfully, the charm of the area has been retained, as authentic Venetian style buildings replaced and built upon what was lost, keeping as close to the original character of the old town as possible. Zante's beach is more picturesque than for bathing; it is mainly rocks, which adhere it more to harbouring a collection of colourful boats from all over the globe than to sun worshippers. Furthermore, just off the shore of the beach, the indigenous Loggerhead Turtles lurk, laying their eggs along the southern shore. In the evenings, these 100 million years old animals can be seen resting on the shores of Zante, often exhausted by the procedure of laying and guarding eggs. Please take note; there are some designated parts of the beaches specifically for turtles only to ensure their survival. If you wish to see the turtles up close there are plenty of local guides and specialists happy to guide you.
